The Wisdom of God
Something clicked for me during our 1 Corinthians Bible study this fall. It comes from 1 Corinthians 1:23-25.
“but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.” (1 Corinthians 1:23–25, ESV)
At that time, I was practicing the discipline of reading a proverb a day. It is a great practice. You read the proverb the corresponds to the date. June 5th, you read Proverbs 5, and so on.
It hit me a little after we studied this passage together that since the Wisdom of God is Christ, then that can also be applied to the Proverbs. Look at these proverbs and where you see wisdom, see if you can replace it with Christ:
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.” (Proverbs 1:7, ESV)
“For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding; he stores up sound wisdom for the upright; he is a shield to those who walk in integrity, guarding the paths of justice and watching over the way of his saints. Then you will understand righteousness and justice and equity, every good path; for wisdom will come into your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul;” (Proverbs 2:6–10, ESV)
“Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding, for the gain from her is better than gain from silver and her profit better than gold. She is more precious than jewels, and nothing you desire can compare with her.” (Proverbs 3:13–15, ESV)
“I have taught you the way of wisdom; I have led you in the paths of uprightness.” (Proverbs 4:11, ESV)
“The discerning sets his face toward wisdom, but the eyes of a fool are on the ends of the earth.” (Proverbs 17:24, ESV)
These are just a sampling too!
It doesn’t work in every instance, but in many it does. Pray for wisdom and insight as you read through Proverbs this week.
Here is a great radio show with Pr. Wolfmueller introduces you to Proverbs. Issues, Etc.
